Cheryl has lived her whole life in Carleton. She was raised in the Carleton EUB church as a child prior to the merger with the Methodist church and has continued her worship and service here at the Carleton United Methodist Church to this day. Throughout her life she has been involved in many functions of the church. Attending Sunday School and Youth Group as a child/youth was her beginning. She and her husband, Jim, were married in the church and raised two children in the church. Cheryl has served in many positions and committees throughout the years. Currently, she is serving as the chairperson of the Member Care and Outreach Committee. The goal of the committee is to reach out to our members, constituents, and community to share the love of Christ and to fellowship with us. Some of their activities include: coffee hours, potlucks, game days, homebound visitations, Friendsgiving dinner, etc. Our church welcomes everyone. This church and church family have been a blessing throughout the years.
I have been a Christian since I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior when I was 12 years old. My whole life I have attended and been active in a church. We moved to Carleton in 2004 and transferred membership here. My husband, Darrell, and I have 3 adult children and 8 grandchildren. We are very blessed. I am retired now but loved being a registered nurse for 30 years. This church is home to me and I have made many friends who are now like family. I enjoy swimming, reading, sewing bags, hanging out with my grandchildren, walking with my husband.
Karyn grew up in Ohio surrounded by Christian role models and raised in the Methodist church. She has memories of attending Sunday School as a preschooler, recalls the awe she felt the first time she could read the words in the hymnal, and remembers gratefully so many family members, Sunday School teachers, and especially her youth leader who helped her grow in faith over the years. As a teen, Karyn began volunteering with the children in VBS and Sunday School. After graduating with an elementary teaching degree and then a Masters in Early Childhood Education, she moved to Michigan with her husband Don in 2000. They found Carleton UMC in 2003 just in time to raise their daughter Morgan and son Tyler in this wonderful church family.
Karyn acknowledges that teaching is her gift and uses it professionally as a preschool teacher at EMU’s Children’s Institute. After participating on the Christian Education team here for a few years as a teacher, she took over the leadership of the team in 2011. She is passionate about making church a welcoming place for everyone and especially making sure children and youth are fully included in the life of the church.
